About us

Hi, my name is Xiqian Luo, or - as my students and their parents often call me - Teacher Rosie. For many years, I have been a teacher and private tutor working with Chinese American families on the Westside of Los Angeles. Over the course of my experiences, what became evident to me was that there was a real need for a high-quality daycare program focused on teaching Chinese language and culture.

Not only do I believe that fluency in multiple languages, best acquired at an early age, will become an increasingly valuable skill in a global, interconnected world, I think helping young children gain an understanding of their cultural heritage may be even more critical. For many ethnically Chinese families in West LA, providing a welcoming environment for children to learn Chinese language and culture is tremendously beneficial to the child and the parents. And of course, I want to provide the highest quality of care and education possible, because I believe that is how I would want my child to be taught.

Combining my experiences working as a teacher and private tutor, managing a pre-school, and all the way back to when I founded, grew, and sold a business while still in college, I decided to open my own daycare to help Chinese American families and their children (and other interested families) with full-time daycare and select weekend lessons to teach Chinese language and culture.

When it came time to choose a name for my new school, I struggled to find one that really resonated. Since this school was such a personal undertaking and passion for me, I wanted to find a name that also had a deep personal meaning to me. After much thought, I finally decided on the name Purple Magpie Mandarin. Purple Magpie is a direct translation of 紫鹊 from my birthplace, the stunning and historic rice terraces of 紫鹊界 (Ziquejie), now a UNESCO world heritage site. Purple Magpie Mandarin connects my past to my future and reminds me of the rich history, culture, and heritage of China.

I hope my story resonates with you and you recognize the importance of helping children understand their heritage and to be proud of who they are. If you are interested in joining our journey and giving your child the opportunity to learn Mandarin and about Chinese culture, contact us today with the link below. We hope we can work with you and your children.

Testimonials

Teacher Rosie has been the best teacher Kylan has had. She genuinely cares for and loves children. My son started daycare […] at age of one and half. Because of Teacher Rosie, Kylan experienced a very easy transition from home to full-time daycare. He often talked about how much he loved Teacher Rosie, and that she was her favorite teacher. He would miss Teacher Rosie on days when he was not at school and would always look forward to going to school.

Teacher Rosie is also a highly effective educator. She observes children as individuals who each possesses unique gifts. When picking up Kylan after school, Teacher Rosie would share with us what happened to Kylan during the day and what his likes and dislikes were. Her attention to details really helped us, as parents, to get to know our son better and discover new things about him.
